How to Review Your Marketing in 30 Minutes

A marketing review does not need to begin with a large dashboard. For a small business, a useful first step is to trace how a customer moves from discovering you to making an enquiry and receiving a response. This 30-minute exercise helps you choose one improvement you can act on this week.

Minutes 0–5: choose the outcome

Write down the business outcome you want to improve: more suitable enquiries, more booked appointments, or more repeat orders. Choose one. Then note the period you will review and what records are available. If the data is incomplete, record the gap instead of filling it with a guess.

Minutes 5–10: check your offer

Open the page a potential customer would visit. Can someone unfamiliar with your business understand who the service is for, what problem it addresses, and how to take the next step? Read it on your phone. An unclear offer can create confusion even when the page looks polished.

Minutes 10–15: follow the enquiry route

Test the contact link, phone button, or enquiry form you actually use. Check what happens after the visitor acts. Who receives the enquiry? Is someone responsible for answering it? Website traffic and contact clicks are useful signals, but neither proves that a suitable prospect reached your team.

Minutes 15–20: review recent conversations

Look at a small sample of recent enquiries. Note how people found you, what they asked, and whether the conversation moved forward. Avoid drawing broad conclusions from a handful of records. Use the sample to identify questions worth investigating, such as repeated confusion about scope or delays in replying.

Minutes 20–25: find the bottleneck

Separate discovery, enquiry, and follow-up problems. Few relevant visitors suggests a different action from many unanswered messages. For example, if prospects ask for a proposal but no one owns the next step, another advertising campaign will not repair that handover.

Minutes 25–30: commit to one action

Choose an action, an owner, and a review date. A useful task might be clarifying a service page or assigning ownership to every new enquiry. Record what you expect to change and the evidence you will check. This review is a starting point; complex tracking or campaign problems may need a deeper investigation.

Your review checklist

Before finishing, confirm that you have one outcome, a tested enquiry route, a named owner for follow-up, and one next action. Repeat the exercise after you have enough new information to judge the change, rather than changing direction every day.
